“Morning in the Forest,” painted in 1958, is one of Vladislav Potekhin's earliest works. This landscape features saturated colours and is painted broadly and with confidence. Look closely at the texture of the brushwork, and how it creates a depth of space. Each impasto brush stroke is layered over a more even layer of paint. Not much is known about Potekhin’s plein air work, but this piece provides a glimpse into his technique. The master mixed colours mainly on the palette, but from time to time he couldn’t help but include separate brushstrokes of pure pigment. This was how he brought the viewer’s attention to the details that were important to him.
